Our blessed Lord before his death passed another examination. One was before the Jewish Sanhedrim, whose proper province it was to try such as were accused as false prophets or blasphemers. This was a kind of ecclesiastical court. The other, with which the next chapter opens, was before Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea at that time; he principally took cognizance of criminal things, such especially as concerned the peace of the country, considered as part of the Roman empire. "And they that had laid hold on Jesus led [him] away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. ... But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end." {Mtt 26:57-58} + "And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes. ... And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire." {Mrk 14:53-54} + "Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him, ... Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also [one] of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not." {Jhn 18:12-17} + "Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest." {Jhn 18:24}
And Peter:
"And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. ... And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me." {Lke 22:33-34} + "Howbeit in [the business of] the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was [done] in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all [that was] in his heart." {2Ch 32:31}
