"And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which [appertained] to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. For I was:
The office of cup-bearer was one of great trust, honour, and emolument, in the Persian court. To be in such a place of trust he must have been in the king's confidence; for no eastern potentate would have a cup-bearer to whom he could not trust his life, poison being often administered in that way. It was an office much desired, because it gave access to the king in those seasons of hilarity when men are most disposed to grant favours. "And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, [that] wine [was] before him: and I took up the wine, and gave [it] unto the king. Now I had not been [beforetime] sad in his presence." {Neh 2:1} + "And Pharaoh was wroth against two [of] his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers." {Gen 40:2} + "And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine [was] before me; ... Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler." {Gen 40:9-13} + "And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:" {Gen 40:21} + "Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him." {Gen 40:23} + "Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember my faults this day:" {Gen 41:9}
