- glory:
- "Glory" is here used for "wealth," riches, or property; since those who possess riches, generally make them the subject of glory. The original word cavod, signifies both "glory" and "weight." If¹ I rejoicedªº because¹ my wealthª [was] great,ª and because¹ mine handª had gottenªº much;ª" {Job 31:24-25} + "From menª¹ [which are] thy hand,ª O LORD,ª from menª¹ of the world,ª¹ [which have] their portionª in [this] life,ª and whose bellyª thou fillestªº with thy hid²¹ [treasure]: they are fullªº of children,ª and leave²º¹ the restª of their [substance] to their babes.ª" {Psa 17:14} + "Be not¹ thou afraidªº when¹ oneª is made rich,ªº when¹ the gloryª of his houseª is increased;ªº ... For when¹ he diethª he shall carry¹ nothing¹¹ away:²º his gloryª shall not¹ descendªº afterª him." {Psa 49:16-17} + "Again, I¹ consideredªº¹ all¹ travail,ª and every¹ rightª work,ª that¹ for this¹ a manª is enviedª of his neighbour.ª¹ This¹ [is] also¹ vanityª and vexationª of spirit.ª" {Ecc 4:4} + "Therefore¹ hellª hath enlargedªº herself,ª and openedªº her mouthª without¹ measure:ª and their glory,ª and their multitude,ª and their pomp,ª and he that rejoiceth,ª shall descendªº into it." {Isa 5:14} + "Thus¹ saithªº the LORD,ª Let not¹ the wiseª [man] gloryªº in his wisdom,ª neither¹ let the mightyª [man] gloryªº in his might,ª let not¹ the richª [man] gloryªº in his riches:ª" {Jer 9:23} + "Again,ª the¹ devilª taketh²º him² upªº¹ intoª an exceedingª highª mountain,ª andª shewethªº himª allª the¹ kingdomsª of the¹ world,ª andª the¹ gloryª of them;ª" {Mtt 4:8} + "He is proud,ªº knowingªº nothing,ª butª dotingªº aboutª questionsª andª strifes of words,ª whereofªª comethªº envy,ª strife,ª railings,ª evilª surmisings,ª" {1Tm 6:4} + "Forª allª fleshª [is] asª grass,ª andª allª the gloryª of manª asª the flowerª of grass.ª The¹ grassª withereth,ªº andª the¹ flowerª thereofª falleth away:ªº" {1Pe 1:24}
